Random Sunday Ramblings: Remember Remember the Third of December.
Also known as the day I thought I lost everything.
This morning I got rid of my Christmas tree.
I am a Jewish human who has always had a Christmas tree. My mom fought against her own mother’s lack of Christmas tree cheer so we always had one while I was growing up. It was always a central image around fun, sweet and cozy memories for me this time of year.
I had a pre-lit tree that I had only bought the year before, in 2021. My ex had told me at the time I wasn’t allowed to get a tree taller than 6 feet because we didn’t have a lot of space, so being the obsessive people pleaser I once was I bought one that was 5.5’ tall with a multitude of fancy light settings that I’d never need.
But I live in a small condo in Minneapolis now, and my partner and I have about 56 plants last time I counted.
I had been giving it some thought the past week or so, and let the day after Thanksgiving, when I always ritualistically put up the tree, pass me right by. After a few days of deliberation I posted the pre-lit tree on our condo’s association Facebook group and someone swooped it up in a matter of hours.
This morning, as my partner grabbed the tree box, she said “Huh. Interesting that you’re selling this on the third of December, isn’t it?”
Ah, yes. December 3rd.
“Oh, wow, that’s right,” I said. At first she started to apologize for reminding me of the date, but I had mentioned it a day or so before so unfortunately I knew I wasn’t going to forget.
